The Queen’s Maundy Thursday visit to York has brought back memories as Ripon residents recall the 1985 visit the Queen and Prince Philip paid to the city.

The Maundy service took place at Ripon Cathedral 27 years ago inthe first visit a reigning monarch had paid to the city in nearly 400 years.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh received a rapturous welcome when they arrived in the city.

Around 15,000 people packed Ripon Cathedral for the historic service, and 118 Ripon residents – 59 men and 59 women received the traditional Maundy coins from the monarch.

At the time the Ripon Gazette reported the serving Hornblower ALan Oliver was “the proudest man in Ripon” after sounding an impromptu blast of the horn at the Duke of Edinburgh’s request.

Ripon City Council presented the Queen with a Chillingham horn to commemorate her visit.

After the ceremonies were over, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were driven to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal for a private tour, before flying back to London from RAF Leeming.
