Mathematical challenge for pupils

Thirsk High School & Sixth Form College welcomed Year Five and Six Pupils from local primary schools, including Carlton Miniott, Pickhill, Sowerby, South Kilvington, Thirsk Community and Topcliffe. to take part in the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Junior Maths Challenge along with 15 selected Year Seven and Eight pupils.

The day started with the pupils being split into mixed groups before being given an introduction explaining the day’s event. The Junior Challenge is aimed at the top third of pupils in each year group. The Maths Challenge question paper contains 25 multiple choice questions,

The pupils worked in their groups to solve four practice maths questions from the beginning of the Maths Challenge paper and four practice maths questions from the end of the Maths Challenge paper.

They had to prepare two presentations of one solution from the beginning of the paper and one from the end of the paper.

The groups gave their two solution presentations before lunch

Finally, the pupils sat in exam conditions to answer the Junior Maths Challenge.

Gold, silver and bronze certificates are awarded to participants nationally the most successful invited to enter follow-on rounds

The school hopes to receive the results in the next six weeks A spokesman said the pupils seemed to really enjoy the experience.”
