The search is on for the alumni of a Ripon school to mark a special anniversary.

This year will mark 50 years since Ripon Girl’s High School merged with Ripon Grammar School in 1962.

To mark the occassion the school is inviting former students to a celebratory afternoon on Saturday, July 14 to share their memories with staff and pupils.

The school’s history can be traced back as far as the seventh century and in 2005 celebrated its 450th anniversary since it was founded in 1555.

One former student who has already contacted the Old Riponians’ Association, after surfing the net hoping to contact her old friends is Bess Fai, formerly Westwick.

Bess was at the High School from 1935 to1940, and having married a Canadian airman now lives in British Columbia.

She is keen to hear from anyone who remembers her, especially Kathleen Bruce, Joan Forth, Jean Burini, Joan Dunn, Irene Gamble, Bessie Wass, Molly Towler, Sylvia Towler, Sylvia Thacker and Marian Sedman.

It is hoped memories like Bess’s and other old students will create a photographic exhibition so the school is asking students to search their attics and dig out old photographs and memorabilia from their time at school.

Headmaster Martin Pearman said: “Ripon Grammar School is one of the oldest schools in the country and has a long and proud history.

“We are looking to re-acquaint ourselves as a school with former students across the generations at a special event next July and to mark the 50th anniversary, we are hoping to mount a photographic exhibition and feature some case studies of memories at school during 1962.” If you think you might be able to help, know someone else who attended school 50 years ago or would like to contact Bess Fai, contact Jackie Dawson on 01765 602647 x392 or e-mail dawsonj@ripongrammar.co.uk.

*Can you identify any of the students featured in the two old school pictures? If so contact the Ripon Gazette by e-mailing news@ripongazette.co.uk or calling into the office at 5a Kirkgate, Ripon.
