Man fined over pollution in Hampsthwaite stream

A FARMER has been fined £2,000 after waste from his property leaked into a stream in Hampsthwaite.

The Environment Agency prosecuted Andrew Atkinson over the pollution of Cockhill Beck, which happened in April 2010.

Food waste being stored to use as animal feed rotted, running down the yard before going into a stream which joined the beck and killing around 15 to 20 small fish were killed by the pollition.

Mr Atkinson pleaded guilty to breaching two rules under the Pollution, Prevention and Control Act. He was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay £1,745 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

The pollution was first reported to Hampsthwaite Parish Council in April 2010 and the Environment Agency arrived on site immediately to carry out investigations.
