Local history talk
The next open meeting of Northallerton and District Local History Society on September 11 will focus on the importance to this region of a family perhaps best known for producing King John of Scotland, 1292-96.
Guest speaker Dr Ruth Blakeley, an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Durham will give an illustrated talk on the Balliol lords who held the baronies of Gainford with Barnard Castle in Teesdale and Bywell in Northumberland for two hundred years in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, together with estates in the North Riding of Yorkshire and Hitchin in Hertfordshire.
This meeting is open to the public at a nominal admission charge of £2.50, while students under 18 will be admitted free. It will take place at the Sacred Heart Church Hall on Thirsk Road, Northallerton, starting at 7 pm.
