More than 400 runners have taken part in three races at the third annual Lightwater Valley Challenge.

The event featured a 10k and 3k run plus a fun run for the under-nines with money raised by the event going to two good causes – North Stainley Primary School and the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association (BLESMA).

“An estimate of money raised for our two charities is £3,000,” said race director Andrea Mansfield.

“A big thank you goes to all the volunteers who assisted on the day – their help is essential to hosting the challenge, and also to our sponsors.”

Although the ground was wet with the heavy downpour from the evening before, a record time was put in for the 10k race by Tom Adams of Ilkley Harriers who secured first place in an impressive 32m 49s. The first lady home was Caroline Lambert, of Wetherby Harriers. The first North Stainley runners home were Richard and Emma Grayshon.

The 3k race was won by Nathan Smith and Lauryn Garwood while the first North Stainley runner home was local primary school pupil Samuel Maddison, part of the Ripon Runners team.

All runners in the 10k and 3k run were presented with a bespoke medal made by workers from Bridge Hewick-based social enterprise Jennyruth Workshops, who also made trophies for the male and female 10k winners

The event sponsors were Piccadilly Motors, Yorvik Homes, Yorkshire Building Society, animal feed company I’Anson Brothers Ltd and Lightwater Valley.
