Knaresborough Rotary Club

Hospitality and Catering student Sophie Sadler from King James's School was Knaresborough's representative at the recent Rotary Young Chef District Final held this month at Bettys of Harrogate cookery school.

Nine candidates sponsored by local Rotary Clubs took part and although Sophie wasn’t the eventual winner, she was thrilled to take part.

Rotary District Governor John Philip and Youth Opportunities District Project Officer Chris Bown presented prizes of chopping boards and personalised certificates to all contestants with the winner receiving an engraved glass Rotary trophy and Bettys cookery book. Each candidate received a Bettys cookery apron from the hosts.

District winner was James Hutchinson from Upper Wharfedale School, sponsored by the Rotary club of Skipton Craven. Runner up was Jason Curria sponsored by the Rotary club of Northallerton Mowbray. James and Jason will represent district 1040 in the regional finals in Mexborough in March. The RIBI National final for Rotary young chef will be held in May in Hitchin.

The aim of the Rotary Young Chef competition is to encourage young people to develop cookery skills and consider healthy eating options and to prove their ability to cope in a demanding competitive situation.

Open to all students in full time secondary school education including students doing NVQ level one in catering colleges, students must be aged 17 or under.

District final entrants were asked to prepare a three-course healthy meal for two people, costing no more than 14.

l Knaresborough Rotary Club meets at Nidd Hall on Monday evenings. Anyone interested should contact the Secretary Ian Ibbotson on 01423 340775 or e-mail Ibbotson821@btinternet.com
