Judgement day as Wetherby carries county's floral dreams
BRITAIN IN BLOOM judges visited Wetherby on Wednesday as part of their national tour to choose the town with the best floral displays in the country.
This year Wetherby is representing the whole of Yorkshire in the national competition, which is run in association with the Royal Horticultural Society.
So it was entirely appropriate that Geoff Humble, Chairman of Wetherby In Bloom, invited the judges to wear white Yorkshire roses in their lapels.
Geoff and ‘In Bloom’ secretary Margaret Dabell escorted judges Jeff Bates and Mark Wasilewski on a tour of Wetherby’s beautiful floral displays, assisted by the sun occasionally breaking through the clouds.
They were accompanied by Deirdre Walton, Regional Manager for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, who is based at Harlow Carr, Harrogate and is keen to develop closer links between schools and ‘In Bloom’ groups.
Mr Bates told the Wetherby News it was always a pleasure to visit “this lovely town.” He added that the quality of displays they had seen during their judging tour had been very high, despite the changeable weather. “
By the time they arrived in Wetherby the judges, both eminent horticulturalists, had already been to see displays in Halstead, Essex; the City of London; Douglas, Isle of Man and St.Saviour’s, Jersey.
They were going on to visit Cupar, in Fife, Scotland, before ending their week of judging in Aberdeen, which is competing in the Best City category.
The winners of this year’s Britain in Bloom competition will not be known until late September.
