JCB ram raid blitzes cash machine
24/1/12 The damaged Co op at Masham - reopened the day after it was ram raided by thieves with a stolen JCB digger.
Two men have been arrested in connection with a night-time ram raid on a Masham shop.
The Co-op store on Park Street, Masham, was attacked in the early hours of Monday, January 23. Thieves used a stolen JCB to smash the shop’s cash machine out of the wall, before taking it away on a stolen Mitsubishi L200 pick-up.
The thieves left Masham along Leyburn Road, and stopped just outside the town to try to gain access to the machine, possibly with grinding tools, police have confirmed.
The JCB, Mitsubishi and cash machine have all now been recovered, and the thieves did not manage to get inside the machine meaning all the money was recovered.
Detective Sergeant Dave Horne, of Harrogate CID, said: “I would like to thank all of the members of the public who reported this theft taking place. Without this information we would not have been able to locate the cash machine and make the arrests as quickly as we did.
Officers are now appealing for information to help with their investigation.
“I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the JCB and Mitsubishi travelling together prior to the theft or may have seen the thieves as they tried to gain access to the machine.
“I am also keen to speak to anyone who may have found any discarded items including clothing along Leyburn Road and surrounding fields to contact the police or Crimestoppers straight away,” DS Horne added.
A 27-year-old man from the Bishop Auckland area of County Durham was arrested on suspicion of burglary has been released on bail. A 24-year-old man was also arrested and is under investigation, and remains in custody for a separate offence.
