Improved rail links up for discussion

IMPROVED rail links between Harrogate and York are expected to be discussed at Harrogate Council's cabinet meeting next Wednesday.

The council voted last week to look into lobbying Network Rail for double-tracking between Knaresborough and Cattal, and Green Hammerton and Poppleton, the installation of automatic barriers and crossings and the electrification of signals.

Coun Don Mackenzie, cabinet member for transport, said it was important to the town's conference trade that more trains operated between Harrogate and York, ideally two to three each hour.

The cabinet should consider on Wednesday whether to recommend that the authority lobbies Network Rail, with a final decision to be made by the full council at a later date.

In related news, Coun Don Mackenzie and Harrogate Chamber of Trade and Commerce chief executive Brian Dunsby hope to meet with the rail regulator to discuss Harrogate to London links in the near future.
