Hundreds flock to city pancake races

HUNDREDS of people flocked to Kirkgate in Ripon to take part in the city's traditional pancake races on Shrove Tuesday.

They were egged on by the large crowds who cheered as dozens of races were staged featuring children and teams from local businesses.

"I would say it is the most successful pancake race we have held," said Coun Bernard Bateman, chairman of Ripon Festivals, the organisers of the event.

In Northallerton, a pancake race was held for the first time since 1990 after health and safety fears forced its cancellation two decades ago.

The event, revived by gourmet food store Lewis & Cooper, took place at the town's Applegarth playing fields and featured traders and businesses competing against each other.
