Driving on in the deluge
Parts of Nidderdale were under water this week after the county was hit by torrential rain and rising waters, but the Nidderdale Show went ahead as planned.
The annual Nidderdale Show was held amid atrocious weather, but the show jumping competition and grand parade had to be cancelled after hours of heavy rain.
Organisers went ahead with show plans after a summer which has seen many events cancelled due to appalling weather.
But by the end of the day’s events persistent rain had taken its toll and parts of the car parks and showground were becoming waterlogged.
Water pumps were on site throughout the day to clear out the worst of the flooding on paths around the showground and in the marquees.
Later in the day, tractors and 4x4s helped cars out of the muddy car parks.
The show’s president, Alan Firth, said he was “thrilled” the show had gone ahead and delighted with the support shown by visitors and local people alike.
Pateley Bridge had 71.2mm of rainfall between Sunday and Tuesday, more than a month’s worth. Flood warnings were issued for homes near the Nidd in Pateley Bridge, as well as the caravan park and play area in the town, but were lifted just after 7am on Wednesday, September 26.
There was chaos on the roads as well, and a stretch of the A1 was closed and fire crews battled to pumps water away from the road.
Near Pateley Bridge, Church Street in Hampswaite was closed due to flood waters, and drivers reported difficulties on roads in upper Nidderdale.
Police were warning motorists to take care on the roads, and warning that driving through standing water would send waves into flooded properties on the road sides.
Summerbridge was also hit by flood waters, after the village was hit by flash floods twice earlier in the year. Firefighters pumped water out of the basement at Summerbridge Primary School, but the school reopened as normal on Tuesday.
