Lindsey Collins from Thornton le Street, Thirsk has received double recognition for her work and academic studies in dementia.

Lindsey, a specialist speech and language therapist who works for Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded the Davida Fortinsky Award for outstanding postgraduate student of 2012 and passed her MSc in Dementia Studies with distinction.

Lindsey has completed the three year course by distance learning whilst continuing to work full-time as part of the nutrition and dysphagia team at West Park Hospital in Darlington. The team works with older people who have dementia and require support with eating and drinking and communication.

Her winning dissertation looked at what services can be provided to meet the needs of local people with dementia who experience communication difficulties.

Lindsey has worked as a speech and language therapist for six years specifically in dementia care and is a great supporter of raising awareness of dementia. She said: “Achieving double success for my work and studies in dementia this year is fantastic and I will be using this learning for the benefit of my patients. My aim is to create a resource for assessment and treatment for people with communication problems, as a result of their dementia. These problems can include having difficulty expressing themselves or understanding what people say to them.”

Outside work Lindsey continues her quest to raise awareness and will be fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Society by completing the Memory Walk Marathon North on September 8. This adds to her fundraising achievements of last year. You can support Lindsey in her quest by visiting her justgiving page at http://www.justgiving.com/mckay-girls-memory-marathon-2012
