Cultivating an interest in growing

YOUNG horticulturalists at a village school near Ripon are looking forward to eating their first produce after establishing a growing area for crops.

Pupils at Grewelthorpe Primary School are using a raised bed and pots to grow carrots, potatoes, onions, broccoli, lettuce, rhubarb, strawberries and herbs.

"The garden is fully organic and it is a great opportunity for children to learn about how to grow and care for plants, vegetables and fruit," said headteacher Karen Butler.

'hard work'

"We would like to thank Mr and Mrs Robertshaw, Mr Rogers and Mrs Rizos for all their hard work creating and maintaining the garden area and Nick Dale, of W Dale & Son, for donating the compost."

The project was also made possible with donations from Grewelthorpe Sports and Social Association, Yorkshire Water, and the Parent Teacher Association, aka FROGS (Friends of Grewelthorpe School).

Mrs Butler added: "We hope to be enjoying the fruits of all this hard work very shortly."
