COLUMN: Mayor of Boroughbridge’s diary

Mayor of Boroughbridge Coun Liz Vose.

Coun Liz Vose reflects on community issues:

On Sunday, David and I were invited by the Ripon branch of the Royal Air Force Association to join them, the Mayor of Ripon and other civic representatives at a Service of Thanksgiving and wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the Battle of Britain in 1940.

As well as commemorating the airmen who fought in the Battle of Britain, this annual service is also a tribute to those who have served and continue to serve in all branches of the military. We were very pleased to represent Boroughbridge at this short but moving service and it was good to see the younger generation, represented by the Air Training Corps, saluting the bravery and sacrifice of their forebears.

On Sunday, September 23, we will be holding our civic service in St Andrew’s Church, Aldborough, at 11am. This is a special service held annually, attended by the Mayor, town councillors, representatives of our town and our neighbouring communities.

This year, for the first time, we will be combining the civic service with St Andrew’s normal family service.

I think this is particularly appropriate as above all the civic service is a service for you, the community. It is an opportunity for us all to come together to celebrate the work of all those organisations which contribute to the life of the community.

During these times of austerity it is important we recognise the value and importance of these local organisations as real improvements can be made when councils and community groups join forces. I do hope you will all be able to come along and join us at both the service and for the refreshments which will be available after the service in Aldborough Village Hall. I look forward to seeing you.

May I remind you all that Boroughbridge Commuicare’s ever popular bingo night will be returning again? This year’s event will be held on Saturday, October 27, and as usual will take place in the Coronation Hall. Tickets cost £5 including supper and are available from the Communicare Office in 1 Hall Square. But do hurry if you want to be part of the fun and have a chance to win one of the fantastic prizes on offer as tickets are in demand and selling fast!

Finally, I have been asked to give a mention to the Ripon Sunrise Walk in support of Saint Michael’s Hospice. The event will be taking place on Sunday, October 14, starting at 7am in Sawley village, passing Fountains Abbey and Studley Deer Park and finishing at Ripon Cathedral where a hot drink and breakfast buttie will await every walker.

More than 80 per cent of the money required to enable Saint Michael’s to continue its work comes from fundraising events such as this.

If you would like to take part, contact the Saint Michael’s fundraising team on 01423 879687 or email them at events@saintmichaelshospice.org
