A talented Boroughbridge teenager has been awarded the appointment of Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet – an achievement recognised as the highest honour in the cadets – in recognition of her outstanding service in the Air Training Corps (ATC).

Sarah Owens, 16, was presented with the certificate by Lord Crathorne, Lord Lieutenant for North Yorkshire, at a ceremony in York last week.

The accolade means Sarah now holds the position of Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for North Yorkshire.

On joining the cadets in 2009, Sarah’s leadership potential was soon identified and she progressed quickly through the ranks to her present position of Flt Sgt.

Sarah has attended camps and sports activities throughout her time with ATC and, as a keen musician, she has also played for the ATC National Concert band and National Marching band at RAF Cranwell .

Sarah has also contributed to the annual Wing Training Days as a member of the 2011 winning Banner drill team– which went on to win the regional competition – while also acting as the squadron’s team manager.

A spokesman at the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) for Yorkshire and the Humber cited Sarah as a committed cadet, always leading by example and regularly supporting the running of the squadron.

Sarah also helps to instruct younger cadets in addition to giving up one weekend every month to instruct at the Air Operations Acquaintance Centre, at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.

Sarah, who attends Ripon Grammar School, said: “I joined the Air Cadets so that I could experience new challenges and find out about military life, and I’ve achieved things I never thought possible.

“But I had no idea that I would achieve such a prestigious award as this.”

Lieutenant Colonel Jeremy Bleasdale, Deputy Chief Executive of RFCA, said: “I’m delighted for Sarah, who is a shining example of what can be achieved when young people involve themselves in extra-curricular activities.”
