'Beat the burglars' roadshow to tour the area
AS THE winter nights draw in, an anti-crime task force is taking to the road in a bid to beat the burglars.
Home safety during the winter is the subject of a new campaign beginning next week that is touring the area to promote basic crime prevention measures.
The Hambleton Community Safety Partnership is visiting the district's market towns to help householders with simple security measures and, throughout the week, a mobile community police office is stopping off at Northallerton, Thirsk and Bedale.
Members of the partnership – including trading standards, the police and Broadacres Housing Association – will be offering advice and information relating to crime prevention issues within the home.
PC Phil Bird, community safety officer with the district council, said the fear of crime always rises during the months leading up to Christmas.
"Within Hambleton, however, crime rates – including burglary – are relatively low compared with more urban areas," he said.
"However, given the earlier darker nights, homes become more vulnerable because they appear unoccupied."
PC Bird added: "To help us, residents must take some basic steps to ensure that homes appear to be occupied by switching on lights, drawing curtains and most of all being sure property is secured."
The roadshow will be on Thirsk Market Square on Monday, Bedale Market Square on Tuesday and Northallerton Market Square on Saturday, all between 10am and 4pm.
