New bus service: Scholes villagers will have the opportunity to use a new bus service from Sunday, providing improved links to Seacroft bus station and St.James's Hospital. Service 63, operated by Centrebus, will operate seven days a week, with an hourly frequency all day and during the evenings. It will replace off-peak service 90, currently operated by First. Buses operating the new service will start from Seacroft bus station and terminate at St.James's Hospital, travelling via Schole

Post office blow: hopes that a Post Office will re-open in Scholes have been dashed, at least for the time being. Satnam Chana, proprietor of the convenience store at the junction of Station Road and Rakehill Road, told the Wetherby News this week that he has not been able to reach agreement with the Post Office so has reluctantly shelved his plan to provide postal services. “I am really sorry, as I wanted to do it for the village, but it has not proved possible,” he said. However, the Post Office has reaffirmed its wish to restore services in Scholes and, in a statement to the Wetherby News, referred to ‘the temporary closure of Scholes Post Office.’ Their spokesperson added: “We apologise for the inconvenience this temporary closure is causing but would like to assure our customers in the area that we continue to do everything we can to find a suitable solution which will enable us to restore service locally.” A full range of postal services continues to be available at Barwick Stores and Post Office.

Target achieved: Tim Ward, the Barwick accountant who, as we reported last week, made his first parachute jump and sky dive with the Red Devils parachute display team, has exceeded his fundraising target. “I hoped to raise 2,000 but the total has already reached 2,600,” he told the Wetherby News this week. Tim, who normally has no head for heights, made his daring leap to raise money for the charity Help for Heroes. Donations can still be made on line at: www.justgiving.com/timwardy or by calling Tim on: 07899 953920.

Diary date: a lunchtime concert by The Harwood Singers will take place at All Saints’ Church, Barwick on Saturday, August 7. Tickets costing 4 are now available. Proceeds will be divided between the village hall roof repair fund and the charity Lupus UK.

Family Fun: A new attraction for children aged under five will become available in September. Friday family fun will begin at All Saints’ Church, Barwick, on September 10, with stories and songs for the children and coffee for the grown ups.
