The Bellman of Ripon City, Brian Rushworth, has died after a short illness aged 79.
Mr Rushworth was widely known for his familiar weekly appearance to proclaim the market “open” and had performed his duties every Thursday for the past 10 years.
A spokesman for Ripon City Council said: “Brian always fulfilled his duties with dignity and pride and he will be greatly missed.
“His Right Worshipful the Mayor, on behalf of the council wishes to offer his appreciation of Brian’s contribution to the city and sincere condolences are sent to his wife and family.”
Mr Rushworth leaves behind his devoted and loving wife of 57 years, Pat, sons Mark and Christopher, daughters-in-law Debbie and Ali, and grandchildren Will, Jack and Tom.
A service to celebrate his life will be held in Ripon Cathedral on Friday, April 10, at 2.15pm.
