A TRADITIONAL craft has helped on of Masham’s famous breweries raise tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

Cooper Jonathan Manby from T & R Theakston’s has flown the flag for Masham’s traditional brewers at fundraising events nationwide. He gives demonstrations of barrel raising - the moment when the staves are raised off the ground and the cask becomes free standing – and gives members of the public the chance to try their hand at the art, in return for a donation to charity.

Over the last 20 years, the public barrel raisings have collected more than £90,000 for organisations including the RAF Benevolent Fund, Macmillan nurses, and Northallerton’s Friarage Hospital. Help for Heroes and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance are the latest good causes to benefit after cheques totalling £1,300 were handed over in December last year.
