Families in Burton Leonard have set out on an ambitious fundraising campaign to transform their community’s playground.

The village has a growing population of young families but the current playground is, they say, in urgent need of repair and doesn’t meet the needs of the community’s younger members.

Georgina Bordewich from the Burton Leonard Sportsfield Trust said: “This is a tiny, tired and inadequate play area for a village with a full primary school. It is not suitable for children over five and there are no other play facilities.”

Now village landowner Maurice Hymas has stepped into the breach by donating land to extend the playground and the village has set out to raise the £70,000 needed to buy equipment and build a play area.

MP Julian Smith has also lent his support and praised the plan when he visited Burton Leonard.

“I was delighted to have been invited to hear about the proposals in Burton Leonard and to meet those involved. There are many people in communities across my constituency who come together to improve the area where they live and they all deserve our thanks for the time and effort they put in.

“I wish everyone involved in the playground good luck for the future and look forward to returning in the future when their vision has become a reality.”

The project’s fundraising committee has already planned their first event to start funds rolling in. A ceilidh is to be held at Burton Leonard Village Hall on Saturday, October 15.
