Ripon’s Independent group has regained control of Ripon City Council from the Conservatives, winning nine of the 15 seats contested at the parish elections on Thursday, May 7.

The Independents had won control of the city council at the last parish elections in 2011 when they took 10 seats to the Conservative’s five but a series of defections from their group to the Conservatives eventually led to the Tories gaining control.

The key battleground at Thursday’s election was in Minster Ward after all five seats of Moorside ward went to Independent candidates – who were standing formally as Independent Putting Ripon Before Party Politics – while in Spa Ward the Conservatives took all five of the seats.

The Independents scored a decisive victory when it was revealed that in Minster Ward they had taken four seats to the Conservatives’ one – the solitary Tory seat being won by Coun Mick Stanley who is finishing his two-year stint as Mayor of Ripon.
