The Mayor of Ripon and the City Development Manager will meet a top Costa Coffee boss after the coffee chain was given the go-ahead to open up in the city.
Ripon city councillors agreed Coun Andrew Williams and Alan Weston should meet with the managing director of Costa’s UK retail arm, Jason Cotta, after a five-month battle to block the national chain from coming to the city.
After café owners across Ripon launched a petition against the planning application – which was approved by Harrogate Borough Council in October – Coun Williams sent a letter of objection to the Costa boss citing the outlet could “potentially harm our current local economy”.
Speaking at the city council meeting, Coun Mick Stanley – who was the only city councillor who voted against the Mayor sending a letter to Costa’s managing director Chris Rogers at a meeting in December – maintained his support for Costa: “I think the response we got back was excellent.”
Mr Weston said at the meeting: “We are looking to build the relationship with Costa Coffee.”
