The Harrogate team bidding for more direct rail services to London have met with two groups hoping to take on operation of the East Coast mainline.

Harrogate Line Supporters Group, part of the town’s Chamber of Trade and Commerce, met this week with First Group and Stagecoach.

Chamber Chief Executive Brian Dunsby told the ‘Advertiser: “We put forward the case for improved services between Harrogate and London.

“We demonstrated that Harrogate has more people likely to travel to London regularly for business or leisure than other places such as Middlesbrough or Hull.

“We also believe it would likely attract visitors to Harrogate.”

The third bidder, Keolis/Eurostar, will meet with the group in early March.

Reporting on the talks, Mr Dunsby said: “They were very productive, but the bidders cannot go into detail as they are gathering information to help them make bids to the Department of Transport.

Harrogate is connected to the East Coast line via York and Leeds.

The team is also behind the bid to electrify the York - Leeds line that serves the district.
