A 15-year-old girl has suffered life changing injuries after she was knocked off her bike near Ripon, on the eve of the Tour de France.

The teen was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary after the crash at Bishop Monkton at around 6pm last night, (Thursday, July 3).

She was riding a silver and white bike when she was involved in a crash with a blue Audi estate car at the crossroads of Knaresborough Road, Hungate and Moor Road.

The driver of the car, which was travelling along Knaresborough Road towards Ripon, was uninjured in the crash.

The road was closed for over four hours while officers conducted their investigations.

Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either the Audi or the cyclist – who was wearing a distinctive pink top – to contact them with information.

Anyone who can help officers with their enquiries is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 2 – and ask for Traffic Constable Andy MacLeod or Harrogate Roads Policing Group.
