A Knaresborough mum, whose daughter has a learning disability has, with the help of a committee of enthusiastic volunteers, realised a dream to set up a local charity.

It has taken Kathy Allday two years to plan but Green Dragon Crafts, a social enterprise and community association which aims to provide social, leisure and volunteering opportunities for people with learning disabilities is now up and running.

Based at 6 Green Dragon Yard, off Castlegate in the centre of Knaresborough, GreenDragon Crafts consist of a retail outlet selling quirky quality products, many made by people with learning disabilities and their carers.

Kathy’s daughter Aimee has Down’s syndrome and the duo have worked together on craft businesses.

Concerns about council cutbacks to care and support for adults with learning disabilities pushed Kathy toward setting up Green Dragon Crafts.

She said: “It is the people with learning disabilities who are around 19 or 20 who I feel most sorry for, they are leaving school and college and not knowing where to go next.

“We can’t do everything but what we are trying to do is put on a range of craft activities and a social environment.”

On Saturday April 12 a club for people over 16 with learning disabilities offering opportunities to learn crafts will start. The club will run on second Saturday of the month from 10.30am until 12.30pm and costs £5 per session.

The Green Dragon shop is open Wednesdays and Saturdays and the organisation is looking for more volunteers.
