Bishopton Veterinary Group is to host a three-mile sponsored dog walk to raise funds to help buy a diabetic alert dog for a six-year-old Ripon girl.

It is hoped the walk around Studley Royal’s seven bridges, which sets off from the practice on Sunday, April 27, at noon, will raise at least £500 towards the cost of the dog for Hannah Bradburne who, as the Gazette reported on March 6, has Type 1 diabetes and whose family needs to raise £3,200 to buy the dog from Service Dogs Europe.

Vet and practice partner, Ian McClive said: “We really wanted to do something practical to help. Our staff and clients love walking their dogs and we’re lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world, so to bring both together and have a sponsored walk to raise money for Hannah and awareness for her condition is something we were really keen to do.”

Hannah’s condition forces the checking of her blood sugar levels 12 times a day - which involves a prick to the skin to draw blood - to make sure that she does not enter a hypoglycemic state.

The alert dogs’ noses are so sensitive that they can detect a change in blood sugar levels up to 30 minutes before a glucose meter can.

Hannah’s dad, Christopher Bradburne, said: “The dogs alert their handler when they are about to have dangerously low blood sugar level, hypoglycaemia, which can cause the body to shut down leaving Hannah in a diabetic coma.”

To join the walk, phone practice nurse Rachel Hawkhead on 01765 602396. Minimum sponsorship is £10. The walk will be followed by afternoon tea and cakes and a tombola at the practice.
