A decorative bike celebrating the imminent arrival of the Tour de France in the area has been stolen from a Boroughbridge residential home.

Staff at Springfield Garth Residential Home, on York Road, believe the cable ties which fastened the bike to a cherry tree were cut in the early hours of Sunday, June 1.

The home had boasted five decorative and colourful bikes, generously donated by the residents’ friends and family and painted yellow by Econ Engineering on Boroughbridge Road in RIpon.

“This crime is really depriving the elderly more so than anyone else,” said Linda Riley, team manager at the home.

“They were enjoying looking out the windows and seeing the bikes there, feeling like they were involved with the occasion.

“We just wanted to get involved as much as we could with the proceedings as it’s incredible the Tour de France is taking place in the district It’s probably the only time we’ll ever get to experience it.’’

Despite the feeling of involvement the bikes have brought to the residents, Ms Riley does not believe they will be looking for any more bike donations following the
theft.

She said: “Unfortunately, I don’t think we will be wanting any more bikes after this as the whole incident has put a black mark on the
festivities.

“When we told the residents what had happened they were really quite upset. It’s a really heartless crime.”

Anyone with information should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
