Catering students rewarded

A catering apprentice from Catterick is celebrating the icing on the cake after winning a top award and securing a job.

Georgina Gibson has become one of the first recipients of the Darlington College Catering Apprentice of the Year Award.

She shares the honour with Ashleigh Wearmouth of Middleton.

The accolades were presented to the Level 3 students for outstanding achievements on their courses, in their apprenticeships and by securing jobs in the industry.

Georgina, 18, of Catterick Garrison, is studying an NVQ in patisserie and confectionary. She became interested in catering when at school at Risedale Sports and Community College in Hipswell and worked as an apprentice at the cafe-restaurant in Richmond Station.

her father is a sergeant in the Royal Dragoon Guards, her mother works for services company Sodexo. Georginsahe has just secured a job as a chef at Gaza Barracks, Catterick Garrison.

“I am really thrilled to get the award as it recognises the effort I have put into my studies,” she said.

“Working for the Army is great. We have just done a summer ball and the standards are incredibly high. One day I would love to own and run an Italian restaurant.

Catering tutor Donna Joyce said: “This is the first time we have presented the awards and both girls thoroughly deserve the recognition.”
