A musically talented Ripon Air Cadet has composed a fanfare for seven trumpets that was given its debut performance at the Birmingham Military Tattoo.

The composer, Cadet Flt Sgt Sarah Owens, also performed with her brother Cadet Sgt Jonny Owens as members of the seven-person Air Cadet National Fanfare Team which played Sarah’s fanfare to a packed crowd of 12,000 people at the National Indoor Arena.

Sarah, 17, was invited to compose the fanfare by Wg Cmdr Gil Singleton, Principal Director of Music, Air Cadets.

Sarah said: “Initially I was nervous but it was such an honour to be asked and I really enjoyed coming up with ideas for the composition and arranging all the harmonies for seven fanfare trumpets.

“Wg Cmdr Singleton said he liked it, so we started rehearsing with the team. Then to be able to play my very own fanfare with Jonny and my fellow cadets at such a massive event was just brilliant.”

The fanfare, which Sarah has titled The Next Generation, was used to introduce the cadet section of the Tattoo.

Sarah, who has been an Air Cadet for four years, is a sixth-form pupil at Ripon Grammar School and has recently been offered a place to study trumpet at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, starting in September. She hopes to pursue a career as a professional musician in the Royal Air Force.

Commanding Officer of 886 Squadron, Flt Lt Chris Crebbin, said: ‘There was a lot of cheering and clapping from 886 Squadron when Sarah and Jonny came on and showed what Ripon cadets can do.”

886 (City of Ripon) Squadron is currently recruiting new cadets aged 13 years or older and volunteer adult staff aged 20 and over.

They meet at the Cadet Centre on Clotherholme Road every Tuesday and
Friday from 7-9.30pm. Anybody interested should contact the squadron on 01765 609622 or email the Commanding Officer at oc.886@aircadets.org
