Braaq art collectors in Harrogate may be interested in the value they have hanging on their walls after the sale of one of his works fetched a hammer price of £50,000.

The oil painting of a cricket match was sold at an auction held at Morphets, in Harrogate, and marks the highest recorded price for the works of the late Brian Shields, also known as Braaq, by collecting £20,000 more than the previous record.

Braaq, who was born in Liverpool in 1951 and died in 1997 aged 46, was a popular artist around Harrogate and it is thought many residents own his work.

The unusual name of Braaq is a misspelling of the famous French artist Braque which Mr Shields was nicknamed at school due to his talent as a child.

Braaq was discouraged from becoming a professional artist and after leaving school became a trainee chef in a hotel in Harrogate.

Morphets, in Albert Street, Harrogate, specialise in the work of Brian Shields, and since the 1990s have showcased his work in their quarterly Fine Art and Antique Catalogue Sales attracting collectors from around the UK and abroad.

Over this period of time prices for his work have increased dramatically but this record breaking result surprised everybody.

An internet bidder became the owner of the piece after out pricing a telephone hopeful.

Two other oil paintings offered in the sale of an industrial landscape and a winter street scene made £25,000 and £22,000 respectively.
