HUNDREDS gathered at Ripon Cathedral to celebrate the lives of loved ones during a special community remembrance service.

The Light up a Life service, organised by Saint Michael’s Hospice was rounded off by the big switch on which saw hundreds of lights on the charity’s Christmas tree inside the cathedral illuminated.

Each light, dedicated to the memory of loved ones, will remain lit throughout the festive season.

Tony Collins, chief executive of Saint Michael’s Hospice said: “We were delighted that so many of our friends and supporters were able to share this personal act of remembrance with us.

“If you missed the Ripon Cathedral service and would still like to take part in Light up a Life, we would welcome you to our second service to be held this weekend at Saint Michael’s Hospice in Harrogate.

“There is still time to make a dedication to a loved one, by telephoning us or going online.”

The service featured a welcome by the Rev Canon Paul Greenwell, Canon Precentor of Ripon Cathedral, an address by the Rev Jonathan Bower, chaplain of Saint Michael’s Hospice and prayers from the charity’s chief Tony Collins.

The lights, which adorn the Christmas tree donated to the charity by Studley Royal Garden Centre, were switched on by long-time Saint Michael’s supporters and volunteers, Judy Jones and Christine Dent.

Mr Collins thanked the cathedral, the Rock Up and Sing Choir, Ripon City Band for taking part in the service along with the Cairn Hotel and Harrogate College who donated mince pies and all the volunteers who helped ensure the service ran smoothly.

A second Light up a Life service will be held outside Saint Michael’s Hospice, Hornbeam Park Avenue, Harrogate, on Sunday, December 11, at 4pm. If you would like to take part in Light up a Life contact the hospice on 01423 879687 or visit www.lightupalife.net
