Church services: there will be communion by extension (BCP) with Adrian Roberts at 8am on Sunday in St Andrew’s Church. Please note the earlier summer time start. The mid week communion service begins at 10.30am on Wednesday.
Chapel service: there is no service on Sunday in the Ebenezer Chapel. The congregation is invited to join the united service at Dallowgill Chapel. It begins at 2pm.
AGM: The Highside Playing Field Association AGM will be held at the pavilion at 7.30pm tonight.
Quiz: the monthly quiz at the mechanics’ institute will be held tomorrow. The bar will be open from 8pm and the quiz begins at 8.30pm.
Meeting: members of Kirkby Malzeard, Laverton and Dallowgill Parish Council meet in the mechanics’ institute at 7.15pm o Monday. This will be the annual parish meeting.
WI meeting: the next meeting of Kirkby Malzeard WI members will be held at 7.15pm on Monday when John Shackleton will be the speaker. He will talk about aid to eastern Europe.
May Day: the flower and produce show committee will hold its annual stall at the market cross on May Day, Monday May 6. There will be plants for sale and a cake and produce stall. Contributions for the stalls will be most welcome. Selling begins at 9.30am. A raffle to raise funds for Yorkshire in Bloom will start off at the market cross and continue at the mechanics’ institute where a coffee morning will be held from 10am-noon.
Cake stall: from 9am on Saturday, May 11 there will be a cake stall at the Methodist Chapel for Helping Ellie. Ellie is a two-year old who has been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy which presents problems with mobility. Any monies raised will go towards adaptations to her home to make life easier for Ellie and her family.
Aldfield - Church service: Rev Caroline Falkingham will celebrate the Eucharist at 9am on Sunday at St Lawrence’s Church.
Dallowgill - Chapel service: there will be a united service at 2pm on Sunday in Dallowgill Chapel.
Concert: Thornton Watlass choir will be presenting a musical evening at Dallowgill Chapel on Friday, May 10. It starts at 7.30pm and will be followed by supper. It is a chapel fund-raising event.
Galphay - Folk dance club: the Highside Folk Dance club members meet in the village institute from 8-10pm on Friday, May 3. The band will be The Roosters and Dave will be the caller. The charge is £3 for adults and 50p for children.
Grantley - Dance: the next dance at the village hall will be held from 8pm-midnight on Saturday. The band will be Roe Valley. There will be a raffle, and refreshments will be served.
Bags2school: there will be another collection of old clothes, bags, curtains etc on Friday, May 3. Please bring any goods you have to be included to Fountains Playgroup before 9am on Friday morning. The November collection raised £240 for the playgroup.
Dominoes: Friday, May 3 is the village hall’s next domino night. It begins at 7.30pm.
WI meeting: when members of Grantley and Winksley WI meet in the village hall at 7.15pm on Wednesday, May 8 the resolution decision will be the first item on the agenda followed by a craft evening at which they will make a fabric notice board. Materials will be provided unless members wish to bring their own choice of fabric. There will be a small charge involved.
Ceilidh: this fund-raising event for the Fountains Parish will be held at the village hall on Saturday, May 4. The doors will be open at 7pm for a prompt 7.30pm start. Entry is £8.50 for adults and £5 for children and this includes a pie and pea supper. There will be a bar.
Sawley - Church service: The service on Sunday in the Church of St Michael and All Angels is the Eucharist. It will be celebrated at 10.30am by the Rev Caroline Falkingham.
Chapel service: there is no service in Sawley Chapel on Sunday. The united service begins at 2pm at Dallowgill Chapel to which the congregation is warmly invited.
Afternoon tea: tea will be served in the village hall from 2pm tomorrow.
Romance in the kitchen: there will be an illustrated talk highlighting how and where generations of a Yorkshire family met and married, featuring land girls, farmers, a military policeman, a train driver and a butler. This will be followed by a brief introduction into family and village history for beginners. The evening is organised by the Sawley Arts Group. It begins at 7.30pm tomorrow in the village hall. Entry is £2 payable on the door.
Village hall events: there will be table tennis from 7pm on Monday, a bowls match at 7pm on Tuesday and short mat bowls will take place at 1pm on Wednesday.
