Blood donors are being urged to come forward and boost vital supplies this autumn.

A blood donation session is being held at Allhallowgate Methodist Church on Allhallowgate, Ripon in a bid to bring blood stocks up to scratch.

Darren Bowen, Lead Donor Relations Manager for Yorkshire said platelets, which are the vital blood clotting component of blood only have a five day shelf life so it was important to get stocks up.

“November can see the start of the colds and flu season which can mean existing donors are unable to donate whilst they are unwell.

“With only four per cent of the eligible population giving blood regularly it is important that others come forward to donate blood if they are able to do so.

“If you are generally in good health you could potentially help to save up to three lives with every donation you give.

“Colds and flu can have a knock-on effect with blood stocks, this is why we need people to act now to help save and improve patients lives.”

Donated blood is used not only in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, such as leukaemia.

Mr Bowen said giving blood can also dramatically improve or save the lives of those in need of blood transfusions.

“a single donation can be broken into three component parts, red cells, plasma and platelets, which means that one donation can potentially save or improve the lives of up to three people,” he said.

Anyone aged between 17 and 65-years-old, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health can become a blood donor.

There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

The session at Thursday, November 10 between 2pm and 4pm then from 5pm to 7.30pm.
