A FIERCE blaze has destroyed 5000 bales of straw in a farm building near North Stainley.

Firefighters were called to the Chariswood Farm at around 5.47pm yesterday, Monday, November 8, where they found a barn containing around 5000 bales of straw well alight.

A total of eight pumps, from Ripon, Bedale, Masham, Thirsk, Leyburn and Boroughbridge battled the fire. A heavy volume pump from Harrogate used water from the lake at neighbouring Lightwater Valley to dowse the flames.

Crews also worked to protect a neighbouring barn housing around 1000 cattle from catching fire.

By 5am this morning firefighters from Acomb, Tadcaster, York and Richmond were still battling the flames, relieving the crews who worked on the scene overnight.
