Fire at former auction market site

A FIRE has damaged derelict buildings at Ripon’s former auction market.

The alarm was raised at 7.40pm yesterday (Thursday, May 5) with three fire crews attending the blaze at the site on North Road.

Residents had been advised to keep doors and windows closed amid fears asbestos could be released into the atmosphere but a spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed only trace elements had been involved.

The fire was extinguished in 90 minutes but crews remained on the scene for damping down.

The cause of the fire is not yet known but officers will re-visit the site for further investigations.
