The Great British Spring Clean is a national campaign which aims to bring people together to clear up the litter in their local towns, villages, and countryside.

Staff from Harrogate Borough Council and McDonalds set the ball rolling last week with litter picks in Ripon, Harrogate and Knaresborough.

Patrick Kilburn, Harrogate Borough Council’s head of parks and environmental services, joined in the litter picking at Hell Wath near Ripon. He said: “The Great British Spring Clean inspired people to volunteer a few hours to get outdoors and pick up some of the litter that surrounds us and blights the areas where we live.

“We were delighted to participate alongside so many willing volunteers who have all played their part in helping make the Harrogate District a cleaner place to live.”

Over the weekend, volunteers from multiple organisations including the Rotary Club, Harrogate Water, and Friends of Aspin Pond all collected up their pickers to help fill 151 collection bags.

Nicky Cain, of Harrogate Water, said: “About half the litter we collected was recyclable and this demonstrates the importance of our campaign with Keep Britain Tidy to get the recycling message across.

“It is a huge community effort which we are proud to be part of, both nationally with Keep Britain Tidy and locally with Harrogate Borough Council.”
