A RIPON church has bid farewell to the vicar who has led their congregation for four years.

Reverend Mark Tanner has been vicar of Holy Trinity Church since 2007, but has left to become head of a prestigious theological college in Durham.

Mr Tanner came to Holy Trinity with wife Lindsay and two children after training at Cranmer Hall in Durham and working in the Wirral and Doncaster.

Now he is to return to the same college as its Warden.

As well as working at Holy Trinity Mr Tanner served as officiating chaplain of the 21 Engineers at Claro Barracks, taking over while the rest of the company were serving in Afghanistan.

He plans to maintain his army links as chaplain of a TA regiment in the North-East.

Forty-year-old Mr Tanner has acted as governor for both Holy Trinity Junior school and Ripon College and, as a motorbike fanatic, helped found his church’s bikers club.
