Plans to demolish and convert a Ripon industrial site into 49 houses have been objected to by Ripon councillors and businesses.
Ash Grove Industrial Estate, off Clotherholme Road, is occupied by 16 commercial buildings although half of the site has been empty for a number of years.
The proposal would see the erection of 49 three- and four-bedroom houses but city councillors objected to the idea of losing an employment site at a planning meeting on Monday.
Coun Pauline McHardy said: “Industrial land shouldn’t be used for houses and removing it would mean the loss of another opportunity for work.”
Concerns were also raised over sewage disposal and the safety of adding a walkway from Lark Hill Drive on to the site.
Developer MCR Property Group has argued the plans would regenerate the site and provide a more efficient and sustainable use of the land.
