Unexploded Second World War bomb found on Bogs Lane

An unexploded World War Two bomb has been found at a home in Harrogate.

A gardener unearthed the suspicious object when erecting a fence at his property on Bogs Lane.

Three residents were evacuated from the area as police installed a 100m cordon around the property.

Bogs Lane and Kingsley Drive were both blocked off but have since reopened.

A bomb disposal team from Catterick Garrison arrived at the scene shortly after 3pm and left around 4pm.

The bomb did not have a detonator and had no chance of exploding.

Two fire engines and police were also in attendance.

Sergeant Andy Graham of Knaresbough said the shell could have been "brought home by someone as a trophy".

He said: "A member of the public had been doing some gardening, putting some fences up and he dug up a World War Two artillery shell.

"He contacted the police. When we arrived we called the northern army bomb unit from Catterick.

"Because it was a large shell we had to move people 100m away which could have been quite difficult as it is a very residential area. Fortunately, as it's a Monday afternoon, there were only three houses with people in.

"The resident was not sure whether the shell had been brought back by someone as a trophy but the disposal team confirmed there was no detonator and no chances of the bomb exploding.

"It's not too much of an unusual occurrence. We've had people clearing out lofts of elderly residents and they've come across ammunition so it does happen but the police are in place to deal with it.

"If you do come across something like this then our advice is to ring the police. Don't touch it, we will come down and have a look at it."
