A 32-YEAR-OLD man is facing 32 child and animal pornography charges after police, responding to a tip-off, found thousands of indecent images on a home computer.

John Smith, of Allhallowgate, Ripon, did not enter a plea to any of the allegations when he appeared before Harrogate magistrates last Thursday.

After hearing the charges covered material at all of the five levels on an indecency scale, court chairman Michael Jefferies told Smith the case was considered too serious to remain in magistrates’ jurisdiction.

He bailed Smith until June 14 when he is expected to be sent for trial at York Crown Court.

Smith is accused of 10 offences of possessing indecent images or videos of children with five of the charges claiming possession of 2,100 photographs at level one, 486 at level two, 454 at level three, 1,178 at level four and 22 at the most serious level, five.

Five more charges allege possession of videos, 15 at level one, 29 at level two, 14 at level three, 79 at level four and four at level five.

Eighteen further charges accuse Smith of distribution of indecent material while the remaining four claim possession of pornographic material involving animals.
