AN INCREASE in thefts from cars has prompted a police warning.
The number of reported crimes rose from 21 last July to 29 so far this month.
Many of the thefts were from vehicles which had been left unsecured or with valuables on display.
Among the crimes was a sat-nav being taken in Coronation Road, and a wallet and personal items in St Winifred’s Avenue, both from unsecured vehicles. A set of golf clubs was stolen in Bogs Lane and a sat-nav was taken in Brunswick Drive. Three thefts in Burn Bridge saw an iPod and two sat-navs taken.
Sgt Chris Spackman of Harrogate Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “I cannot stress enough how important it is that motorists take even the most basic of crime prevention measures.
“These include locking your vehicle and removing valuables - including sat-navs. It’s very easy to forget them, but they are extremely tempting to opportunist thieves.
“If you have a garage or outbuilding, please use it and lock your car away when not in use. If thieves can’t see your car, they can’t steal it.”
Sgt Spackman also advised using steering or wheel locks and not leaving keys on view.
