Latest decisions from Harrogate Magistrates Court: Man stole from ten shops in town centre

Nicolae-Marius Anton, 21, of Hampsthwaite Road, Harrogate, was fined £150 for driving while under the influence of alcohol on Leeds Road, Harrogate. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85, and was disqualified from driving for 20 months. No separate penalty was imposed for driving without insurance or without a licence.

Lukasz Minda, 28, of Haywra Street, Harrogate, was given an eight-week community order for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, which the court found was racially aggravated, with intent to cause harassment, alarm or distress to another person in Parliament Street, Harrogate. He was made subject to an eight-week curfew and was ordered to pay compensation of £150 and costs of £85

Patrick Mukono, 28, of Tong Road, Farnley, Leeds, was fined £120 for driving without due care and attention on Harrogate Road, Ripon. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £330 and costs of £85, and three points were added to his licence. No separate penalty was imposed for failing to stop after an accident in which damage was caused to a Ford Fiesta.

Sean Barrie Parcell, 29, of Stanhope Drive, Harrogate, was fined £300 for using a VW Polo on Woodlands Road without insurance. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £30 and costs of £85, and six points were added to his licence. No separate penalty was imposed for driving without a licence.

Cosmin Vasile Cariga, 38, of Cooper Lane, Bradford, was given a 12-month community order for stealing £350 of meat from Sainsbury’s in Wetherby Road, Harrogate. He was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and to pay compensation of £350. No action was taken for committing a further offence while subject to a conditional discharge.

Jamie Lee Crawshaw, 21, of Springfield Road, Boroughbridge, was given a 12-month community order for two counts of theft, one of being drunk and disorderly, and one of criminal damage. He stole DVDs worth £35 from HMV in the Victoria Shopping Centre, Station Parade, Harrogate and, on another date, stole a Blu Ray DVD of The Guv’nor worth £8.99. He was found to be drunk and disorderly in Kings Road and on the same date, damaged the walls, floor and door of cell 10 at Harrogate Police Station. He was ordered to complete 60 hours of unpaid work and to pay compensation of £8.99 for the DVDs and £50 for the damaged police cell. Magistrates imposed a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £85.

Anthony James Mulkeen, 51, of North Farm Road, Gipton, Leeds, was given a 12-month community order for 10 counts of theft from shops in Harrogate, two from shops in West Yorkshire, and possession of a de-tagger in Gap in James Street, Harrogate. On November 27, 2016, he stole clothing worth £100 from Fat Face in Princes Street, clothing worth £40 from River Island in Cambridge Street, clothing worth £65 from Rohan Designs in Station Square, two Radley purses worth £150 from Hoopers in James Street, clothing worth £15 from Next in James Street, household items worth £138 from Laura Ashley in James Street, clothing worth £307.50 from Jack Wills in James Street, household items worth £52 from The White Company in James Street, clothing worth £129 from Jigsaw in James Street, and clothing worth £19 from Sports Direct in the Victoria Shopping Centre. He also stole clothing worth £129.98 from Mountain Warehouse in Ilkley, and clothing worth £49.99 from Oasis in Trinity Leeds. He was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

The following were dealt with at Harrogate Magistrates Court on March 16

Jonathan James Barber, 36, of Quarry Lane, Harrogate, was given an 18-month community order for assaulting occasioning actual bodily harm to a woman in Harrogate, and for making a threatening phone call to another woman in Boroughbridge. He was ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work and a Building Better Relationships programme. Magistrates imposed a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £300. A one-year restraining order was imposed preventing him from contacting the victim of the threatening phone call.

Ian Walker, 67, of Almsford Avenue, Harrogate, was given a 12-month conditional discharge for three counts of resisting a police officer. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £20 and costs of £85.

Nathan George McGowan, 23, of Century Walk, Starbeck, Harrogate, was given a two-year community order for five counts of theft, three of failing to surrender to custody, and one of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of violence, all while subject to a conditional discharge. He stole a bottle of Frosty Jack and a pork pie from One Stop Shop in Newborough, Scarborough, and a bottle of Kronenberg from the same shop on the same date. In two thefts from Sainsbury’s in Ramshill Road, Scarborough, both on the same date, he took a bottle of Heineken, a pack of chorizo and two meat feast pizzas, as well as two bottles of Stella Artois, one meat feast pizza and a Kinder white chocolate bar. On the same date, he stole alcohol and confectionary from Spar Stores in Falsgrave Road, Scarborough. He was ordered to complete six months’ treatment for alcohol dependency, and to pay compensation of £5.50 to One Stop Shop, £4.75 and £7.15 to Sainsbury’s, and £28.99 to Spar.

Robert Harry Roddam, 29, of Spruisty Road, Harrogate, was given a two-year conditional discharge for assaulting a man at High Harrogate Working Men’s Club in Devonshire Place. He was ordered to pay compensation of £100, costs of £300 and a victim surcharge of £20.

The following were dealt with on March 15

Stephen Paul MacDonald, 32, of Princess Close, Ripon, was given a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 24 months for assaulting a woman by beating her. He was ordered to complete six months’ treatment for alcohol dependency and to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work. Magistrates imposed a victim surcharge of £115 and costs of £85, and made him subject to a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim. No separate penalty was imposed for threatening to damage windows belonging to the victim.

Matthew Aaron Yare, 34, of no fixed address, was bound over in the sum of £50 for 12 months to keep the peace after behaving in a manner which breached the peace at Harrogate Police Station in Beckwith Head Road.
