Farmers may have been hoping for rain but one part of the agricultural community was hoping for a few hours of sunshine - and they got it.

The rain stayed away from North Yorkshire County Show, held at South Otterington near Northallerton this weekend.

Occasional sprinklings of rain were not enough to dampen the spirits of the thousands of people streaming onto the site from 8am.

Attendance was expected to be at the same level as last year with over 10,000 visitors. Show secretary Alan Andrew said the weather was a great help.

“Last year was a really sunny day too so we are pleased to keep pace with 2010 levels.”

The show which enjoys the biggest poultry display in the country, still remains a very local event with many of the exhibitors coming from the surrounding ara.

Entertainment was provided by the Northallerton Area Schools Concert Band and local scout troupes were helping to distribute programmes in exchange for donations to their forthcoming trip to Australia.

“If there is one thing I really wanted to get across it is that this show is a real team effort with lots of people involved in its organisation,” said Mr Andrew.

The show committee made a £500 donation to Middlesbrough and Teeside Philanthropic Foundation, the chosen charity of show chairman Andrew Preston.
