The growing sport of gateball – a mallet team sport similar to croquet – is establishing its roots in Ripon.
The UK National Gateball Centre is to be at the Ripon Spa Hotel Croquet Club which has long been a prominent croquet club in Britain, regularly hosting international competitions as well as nurturing young players who have successfully gone on to represent the country.
Now it hopes to replicate this success with gateball.
Samantha Thompson, who has represented England at croquet and is part of the team to bring gateball to Yorkshire, said: “We’re delighted that Ripon has been chosen to be the National Centre for Gateball. Playtime lasts just 30 minutes, yet it’s very competitive and is one of the few sports where players of different ages can compete alongside one another. It’s great fun.”
At a special three-day event to be held from Tuesday to Thursday, August 19-21, players and anyone interested in learning this relatively new sport will be gathering in Ripon to take lessons, practise their skills and compete for the first time at the new National Gateball Centre.
The three days will culminate with a celebration dinner and the official inaugural ceremony.
