The strength of the local business community has been demonstrated this week with the publication of The Yorkshire Post’s Top 250 Companies in Yorkshire.

No fewer than 14 companies from the circulation areas of the Harrogate Advertiser Series appear in the listing, which is produced in association with Leeds Business School and ranks businesses by turnover.

Heading the Top 250 – and leading the pack by a huge margin – are supermarket giants Asda and Morrisons, with sales of £23.2bn and £16.8bn respectively. In third place is the Total Lindsey oil refinery at Immingham, with turnover of £4.4bn.

In our area, the list of sectors covered is extensive and includes IT, hotel and conferencing, food manufacture and care home management.

US-owned Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions, whose UK headquarters are in Harrogate, takes 33rd place in the list, with turnover just short of £560m.

In 53rd place, The Fuelcard Company, which employs 77 people from its Knaresborough base and is one of the UK’s largest commercial fuelcard resellers, rang up sales of £413.8m, while Harrogate-based hotel and conference centre operator Principal Hotels turned over £308m to take 65th place.
