A NEW visitor guide to Ripon has been launched.

Representatives of major visitor attractions in the area including Fountains Abbey, Ripon Cathedral, Lightwater Valley, Ripon Museums and Newby Hall joined the 20 other members of the Ripon Ring from attractions in and around Ripon at the launch of the seventh Visit Ripon guide, which took place at the Ripon Spa Hotel.

Visitor attractions in and around Ripon drew around 1.2 million visitors to the area in 2011, Ripon Ring chairman Coun Bernard Bateman said.

Ripon Ring members have invested more £200,000 in promotional activities for the area, which the group said translated into a contribution to the economy of at least £60 million, and they hope to top this number with a successful year in 2012.

Eighty-thousand copies of the new Visit Ripon guide have been printed, of which 70,000 will be distributed by Northern Distribution to various venues catering for tourists across North Yorkshire.

The remaining 10,000 will be delivered in the Ripon area by, in the main, the Ripon Girl Guides.

Every home in Ripon will receive a copy of the guide so city residents of can promote Ripon to their family and friends, said Coun Bateman.

Coun Bateman went on the thank all the Ripon Ring members and the advertisers in the Visit Ripon 2012 Guide for their support in making the 7th edition possible.
