A bed and breakfast business in Masham has been selected as among the top ten in the world by users of the TripAdvisor website.

Millgate B&B, which was set up by Coun Andrew and Sue Burrell in March 2012, has been ranked “excellent” by 100 per cent of its reviewers and deemed the ninth best bed and breakfast in the world in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards 2014.

“It’s not only raising our profile but helping to raise the profile of Masham,” said Sue.

News of the award has travelled fast with press and television journalists from Japan contacting the couple, with two reporters planning to visit the Burrells in March to write a travel feature for Japanese tourists.

“It’s quite amazing,” said Sue, whose B&B business is based in Masham’s former poor house with the old fire station and jail attached.

“It’s wonderful to be getting the publicity for the town. Because of TripAdvisor we get guests from literally all over the world.”

The TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards are based on user reviews from the past 12 months. The reviews on the website about Millgate B&B are very complimentary, including their most recent from Katie Scarlett in Leeds, who wrote on Sunday: “Everything about our stay in Millgate was perfect ... apart from the weather, but we can’t hold our perfect hosts, Sue and Andrew, responsible for that! We had a lovely warm welcome with delicious home-made scones.”

A year ago, when the bed and breakfast had just been operating 10 months, reviews from users placed it in the top 25 in the UK and Europe.

“This latest award has just notched us up to the next level,” said Sue, whose B&B added a third bedroom to its accommodation in December and is fully booked for Le Tour’s arrival in July

“It is topping off the year when we are having the world looking at Masham with the Tour de France.”
