Independent cycle shop Moonglu has celebrated its ten year anniversary as it continues to thrive.
The Ripon business was opened in August 2002 by Mark Swindells, who sold it about a year later to the current owner, Neil Dunkley. Mark still works alongside Neil in the shop.
The shop offers specialist services such as wheel building for mountain and road bikes - which Neil himself carries out by hand - and custom built bikes.
Neil, a cycling enthusiast who grew up in Ripon, said: “Moonglu’s handbuilt mountain bike wheels have been increasingly popular over the last three years. As our reputation for well built, good value wheels has spread, the demand has increased massively.
“But perhaps our biggest success has been our custom built bikes. We now build bespoke specced bikes from two of the most reputable and high quality frame builders, Nicolai and Lynskey.”
The business also stocks everyday items, alongside a range of mountain bikes, road bikes and children’s bikes. It is this, said Neil’s wife Kelly, that is one of the reasons for Moonglu’s longevity.
“We can offer somebody who wants to spend an awful lot of money what they need, but we can also give you a new inner tube to fix a puncture,” she said.
Another key to Moonglu’s success is its online shop, which was launched about three years ago.
“The online shop has seen the business grow and enabled us to have a customer base overseas as well as here in the UK,” said Neil.
He said Moonglu’s ‘personal touch’ was also a big draw for customers to the shop, many of whom are regulars who take full advantage of the staff members’ wide expertise and knowledge on the products available.
The majority of the shop’s customers are from the local area, but people have also visited from Scotland, the south of England and Sheffield.
Neil said: “I’m extremely proud of what Moonglu has achieved in the past ten years and how it has continued to offer our customers an excellent service, which couldn’t be done without our fantastic team.
“We also would like to thank all of our loyal customers for their continued support over the years. We look forward to the next decade!”
Moonglu also contributes to the Ripon community by supporting local schools through event sponsorship and cycle safety, trying to encourage younger people to take up the sport.
