Boost for area apprentices

The new apprenticeship scheme for Hambleton Council

The new apprenticeship scheme for Hambleton Council

A £100,000 boost is being given to a scheme which will bring up to 50 young people out of unemployment and into the workplace.

Members of Hambleton District Council’s Cabinet have given the green light to plans to launch an apprentice scheme to help some of the unemployed in the district.

The initiative, the brainchild of council leader, Neville Huxtable, will support 18 to 24-year-olds in their first year of work.

it will also include a ‘wage subsidy’ scheme Hambleton will provide a cash pot to pay 50 per cent of the wages of 15 young people for six months.

The authority is working with local business leaders and Job Centre Plus to bring young people living in the Hambleton district back into work with local businesses.

To qualify they will have been out of work for more than 26 weeks. This will be in addition to the apprentice schemes already run by the council.

ten new apprentices have just been taken on in the council’s waste and street scene department.

“Many young people leave school and have no hope of a job and no future to look forward to,” said Coun Huxtable.

“Through this ground breaking scheme we are going to help some of them into employment, reducing the unemployment levels for this age group by around 25 per cent and at the same time helping to boost the local economy.

“This authority has banked a good deal of savings, partly through its shared services programme, and it is now time for us to look at ways of reinvesting some of those savings back into our communities.”

He said the council will be particularly looking to work with small businesses which struggle to afford to employ apprentices.
